Learning, to Grow

I’ve been a creative person for longer than I can remember, and probably the most important thing about being creative is being curious and open to learning and growing. One way I’ve been challenging myself over the last few weeks is in a commercial acting class. Commercial work is always robust, no matter what market, and I decided to brush up my skills to stay competitive. I’ve been in the business a long time but like any business, it continues to change, so it’s important that I continue to adapt to the changes and learn and grow.

What’s been especially great about the class is that it’s taught by Anglea Peri, owner of Boston Casting, and recently featured in Boston Magazine’s Hollywood Comes to Boston issue. Angela cast me in my first film, Celtic Pride, back in 1995, as the stand-in for Damon Wayans, so we go way back.

Not that I ever thought I knew it all about commercial acting, but this class has been enlightening in many ways that will do nothing but enhance my approach to the craft and make me a better commercial actor. Even if you’re not an actor, I highly recommend taking an acting class. Learning how to be vulnerable and perform in front of fellow students is a safe way to learn more about yourself, work on your public speaking skills, and take criticism. This is also key to the importance of being open to learning something new.
